WHY WE EXIST...

What country do you think these statistics are from?

  • Aids is now the leading cause of death for Black omen ages 25 to 34.
  • Black women are 23 times more likely to be diagnosed with AIDS than white women.
  • 75% of HIV positive women contract the virus through sex with men.
  • Risk of HIV infection is up to 3 times higher among women who have experienced gender- based violence compared to those who have not.

You're initial guess may be a country in Africa. You would be wrong. These statistics are from the United States, released August 2008 in a report by the Black AIDS Institute.Although more men than women have Hiv/Aids, women of color represent the fastest growing demographic contracting HIV/AIDS.We also know that African American women have been, and continue to be,disproportionally affected by the HIV?AIDS virus, and that younger women are more likely to become infected than older women.

These statistics are not in somebody else's cmmunity. This is a reality for the women you work with.... the women you attend church with..... the women in you neighborhood..... the women in your family.... the women you call your friends. You can help us change this reality.

For NHEM, these statistics are a call to action. We firmly believe that one  must step outside their comfort zone to affect change, because "you have to do what you have never done before to obtain something you have never had."

The Report is entitled "Left Behind. Black America:A Neglected Priority in the Global Aids Epidemic" According to the Center for Disease Control
